Value… It’s a funny word as it has so many different meanings depending on a person’s viewpoint.
First meaning is… ‘the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something.’ But what if something or someone is of value but two people disagree on it.. who makes the judgment to the value and worth? As for the usefulness, again if something is of value at one point does it then lose it’s value as time goes on when no longer needed?
Second meaning.. ‘principles or standards of behaviour; one’s judgement of what is important in life.’ This can cause several people to have differing opinions about the same subject, as we all have different values and standards we live up to… Principles are great and i love them but if no one else values yours or shares them, then they are again redundant.
Third… ‘consider (someone or something) to be important or beneficial; have a high opinion of’ Beneficial.. all the words used to describe value seem to be born out of what something or someone can do for you.
We all have a set of values that we run our lives by. The conflict begins when others do not share our view nor understand our principles. So how do we determine who is right? Especially when your own values conflict each other… We can believe in two routes of principle but sometimes they will clash. Are we then forced to sit down and establish which value/principle is more important to us and when you then factor in other values around friendship and ethics… are we doomed to forever question and be angry???
